VISIONS IN THE DARK / DocumenTARY (2023)

SYNOPSIS

You will never look at a horse the same way again. Mainly because looking is not the same as seeing. This is the heart of our documentary: an invitation to truly see.

In Visions in the Dark, the relationship between horses and trainers becomes a powerful metaphor for our times, revealing how our disconnection from nature has led to a form of modern blindness. Confined to our narrow perspective, we lose touch with intuitive ways of communicating and gradually close our minds—and our vision—to the world around us.

But there is another path, paved by those brave enough to see differently. We follow Monty Roberts, pioneer of a non-violent training method based on silent body language, and his lead instructor Denise Heinlein, as they challenge old traditions across breathtaking landscapes in California, Patagonia, and Europe—including an audience with the Queen of England. Along the way, we meet experts in perception and communication, such as Denis Connolly, director of the Paris School of Seeing, and acclaimed writer Yoko Tawada, who join a thought-provoking conversation about the limits and possibilities of language in human understanding and authentic connection.

Visions in the Dark is an invitation to recover our ability to see the world as if for the first time. Because to reconnect with nature is, ultimately, to reconnect with ourselves. And the closer we come, the farther we see.
